Daryl Hine was born in British Columbia, Canada, and attended McGill University, followed by the University of Chicago for both his master’s degree and doctorate. After completing his Ph.D., Hine remained at the University of Chicago as a professor for several years. He was the recipient of a Canada Foundation-Rockefeller fellowship, an Ingram Merrill Award, a Guggenheim fellowship, an American Academy and Institution of Arts and Letters Award and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Hine was also a former editor of Poetry magazine.
